GOOD to FAIR CONDITION
This sale is for a VICTORIAN LEATHER and hardback edition entitled “Bleak House,” by Charles Dickens, with 8 illustrations, including a frontispiece.
It was published by Chapman and Hall, of London, in circa 1870.
Dickens purpose for writing this story was to illustrate the evils caused by long drawn-out lawsuits in the Chancery Courts. In his youth, as a reporter, he had observed the workings of the courts and had remarked: “The one great principle of the English law is to make business for itself”. This story, Bleak House, is often considered to be Charles Dickens finest work, although not his most popular.
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), was arguably the best English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as being a vigorous social campaigner and was one of the greatest ever writers. He was most famous for his storytelling and numerous memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime.
The book measures 7 inches x 5 inches x 1.25 inches and has 540 pages + illustrations.
The book is in good internally neat condition for its age, with wear/scuffs/bumps to the contemporary hardback cover (marbled boards and leather spine/corners), with a little foxing near the covers, original little ‘Athenaeun Liverpool’ sold by order stamps at the front and to the plates, and no other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding fragile/shaken in the middle with some blocks of loose but no missing pages (binding is exposed in the gutter between a few pages). As issued, there is no dust-jacket.
A good reading copy of this wonderful illustrated VICTORIAN edition.
