For sale is a rare early issue of the first edition of the original parts of Dombey and Son, by Charles Dickens. Published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1848. 624p.p. Adorned with a full suite of 40 plates by Phiz. Six-line errata page present. It includes many of Smith's issue points - including Captain Cuttle's hook to his left arm on the titlepage.

Bound in its original deep green calf over bevelled buckram boards, with red morocco title labels and wonderful gilt tooling and raised bands to the spines. Lines stamped in blind and gilt to the boards. Original green endpapers. Marbled page edges.

Volume 1 bears the Crown stamp of Arthur Erskine. He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the DSO in 1916. He served in the Royal Artillery until 1924, when he became Crown Equerry in the Royal Household of the Sovereign. From 1919 to 1924 he was an Equerry to the King. From his retirement in 1941 until his death he was an Extra Equerry. From 1939 to 1963 he was Secretary and Registrar of the Order of Merit, and from 1941 to 1946 Secretary of the Ascot Authority. He was made a CVO in 1926. He was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1931 and promoted to Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) in 1935.

Externally in beautiful order. Internally the textblocks are largely very clean, and there is the predictable sporadic spotting and toning to some plates - some heavier than others. Overall, an extremely impressive example of this popular Dickens classic, in its original fine bindings.
