Item specifics

Author: Charles Dickens Subject: Fiction
Format: Original fine binding Printing Year: 1844
Language: English Bound from the parts: First Issue
Date of Publication: 1800-1849 Beautiful contemporary binding: By Tout
Place of Publication: London Original part wrapper bound-in: Very rare indeed

For sale is a rare first issue of the original parts of Martin Chuzzlewit, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1844. 624p.p. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. All of Smith's first issue points here present; including the '100£' sign to the vignette and the ten-line. Halftitle present. Bound to the front is an upper wrapper from an original serialised parts.

Bound in very fine contemporary tan calf by Tout. The spine decorated with raised bands and incised panels - profusely tooled in gilt. The titles stamped in gilt to wonderful calf labels. Ornate gilt inner dentelles. All page edges gilt. Fine silk ribbon page marker. An ornate armorial bookplate for 'J.F.G. Tutt' to the front pastedown. Stamped by Tout to the verso of the FEP. A booksellers' ticket for Myers and Co., New Bond Street, London, to the front pastedown.

The binding is in very nice order; clean, the calf bright and the gilt, for the most part, very bold. To the spine are a few dry areas, and a touch of extraneous shelf wear. The RH hinge has a light surface split in places, but it remains very firmly attached. Internally some of the plates are toned to the margins. The textblock remains largely very clean - it is one of the cleanest we have handled.

Overall, this is a very impressive volume; particularly rare in the first issue of the original parts, and bound in a handsome Tout binding.
