For sale is a very fine and scarce early issue of the first edition of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. 624p.p. Illustrated with a full suite of 39 plates by H.K. Browne, and an additional suite of 35 plates by Onwhyn. The vital first issue error 'latter' for 'letter' present, along with the vast majority of Smith's textual errors.

Bound in exquisite recent full calf, with raised bands to the spine and panels tooled in gilt. Gilt borders to the boards and hand sewn bands.

The binding is in perfect order throughout. Internally the textblock is largely very bright. The plates, while some have the predictable sporadic marking, remain cleaner than almost always encountered. A charming contemporaneous ownership inscription to the FFEP, for Robert Stote-Fox.

Stote-Fox came up to University College, Oxford in May 1838, obtaining his BA in 1842 and his MA in 1845. He came from South Shields in Durham - so was still part of the age when Univ. was still the College for people from north-east England. Rather unfortunately, in November 1839, he got rusticated, but the College have no record what he actually did, or for how long he was away. Still, he must have mended his ways, because he took holy orders and became a rector in Suffolk.

Overall, this volume is extremely scarce and desirable, in that it is finely bound by a Master Binder, it is a very early issue of the original parts, it has the additional suite of plates, and the most interesting provenance. It would grace any collection.
