TRUE FIRST EDITION/RARE
ORIGINAL CALF LEATHER BINDING
OUR MUTUAL FRIEND
LONDON: Chapman & Hall, MDCCCXL, 1865 [published date: 1865]. RARE FIRST
EDITION, First Printing, in two volumes, bound from parts with stab holes
visible throughout. 8vo 8.75" x 6" inches (LxB). Pp. xi, (1, blank), 320;
vii, (1), 310, (1, ads) pages. Illustrated with 40
full page engravings by Marcus Stone. Volume 2 has the first issue text, with
the word "pricipal"
on page 115, line 38. Fine original 3/4 calf leather
binding, over marbled boards, spine with 5 raised bands & a red gilt lettered
morocco label. Our Mutual Friend (written in the years 186465) is the last
novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works,
combining psychological insight with social analysis. It centres on, in the
words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make
of life" but is also about human values. In the opening chapters a body is found
in the Thames and identified as John Harmon, a young man recently returned to
London to receive his inheritance. Were he alive, his father's will would
require him to marry Bella Wilfer, a beautiful, mercenary girl whom he had never
met. Instead, the money passes to the working-class Boffins, and the effects
spread into various corners of London society. POSTSCRIPT dated September 2nd, 1865:
