For sale is a fine and scarce early issue of the original parts of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837. 609p.p. Beautfully illustrated throughout with a full compliment of 43 plates by R.Seymour and Phiz, included are the two rare and later-supressed plates by Buss. Errata/directions to the binder page present.
This example contains all of the first issue errors, as mentioned by Hatton and Cleaver, including: 'E' to the foot of p.25, 'hodling' present to line 29, p.260; '7' misaligned to p.267 and 'Veller' present to line 5, p.342.
Bound in contemporary tan calf over grey/brown pebbled buckram boards by J. Kelly of Gower Street (his bindery ticket to the front pastedown). Titles and bands ruled in gilt to the spine. Original cream endpapers.
Externally in very sound and untouched order; extraneous surface rubbing to the calf in places. Internally it remains complete, and the textblock is very bright. Some plates have the predictable spotting/marking in places, while others remain very clean indeed.
Overall, a superb and rare early issue of this Dickens classic, with the vital H&C errors present. It is refreshing to see such an untouched example, bound by a master binder of the time.
