CHARLES I silver 'SUPPORTER'S BADGE, given to Royalists (Civil War) in the1640s

Description

Cast and chased silver-gilt 'Royalist Badge', given to supporters of the Royalist Cause, made by Thomas Rawlins in the early 1640s.

Obverse : Long haired bust of Charles right, wearing lace collar and sash ,  incuse- 'CAROLVS DG MAG BRI FR ET HIB RX'.  Reverse : Incuse crowned Royal Arms within garter, HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE'. All within an oval brace with four lugs, the upper being pierced for suspension, but broken.

During the English Civil War (1642-51) both the Parliamentary and Royalist factions commissioned medals to be given in recognition of soldierly valour.

In May 1643 Charles ordered the Wardens of the Mint at Oxford, where he was headquartered, to have a medal made which would be worn 'on the breast of every man who shall be certified under the hands of their Commanders-in-Chief to have done us faithful service in the forlorn hope'. It was also commanded 'that no soldier at anytime do sell nor any of our subjects presume to buy or wear any of these said badges other than they to whom we shall give the same'.

This particular medal, on which are depicted Charles and the Royal Arms, would  ave been worn by a supporter of the Royalist Cause in about 1643 to 1645. The medal is quite sharp - so this is an early casting made at the beginning of the period.  Ones made towards the end of the war, ie late 1640s are slightly cruder and not so crisp as they had been recast so many times.

MI. i 360/231    E.167B     38.25x29mm. (not including lugs)    0.35gm.     Scarce

Very Fine, nicely toned, lightly gilded (contemporary), suspension loop at top broken off (a long time ago).
