Sail on, O Ship of State ! - Rare Broadside Signed By Roosevelt and Churchill + Signed Photograph of Churchill + Four Photographs of the Atlantic Meeting
Churchill, Winston and Roosevelt, Franklin

Book Description: Raphael Tuck and Son, London, 1941. A stunning collection of Churchill and Roosevelt memorabilia from the estate of Arthur Prettyman, valet to President Roosevelt. Foremost among the items is the rare Longfellow verse ' Sail On, O Ship of State' signed by both Roosevelt and Churchill. This rare broadside was printed by Churchill in honour of Roosevelt's letter which quote Longfellow's verse, and distributed as a memento at the two leaders first meeting in 1941. Measures approx 8.5 by 7 inches. Printed in tiny quantities the broadside was signed by both leaders and a handful were distributed to the closest aides and senior political figures at the meeting. Only a handul have reached the market, including examples from Hap Arnold and John Roosevelt. The last example, the Hap Arnold copy, sold for $96,000 at Bonhams New York in 2008. Though the signatures on this example are a trifle faded to sepia, otherwise the broadside is in excellent condition with the original ribbon and label to the verso. In addition to the broadside are four original photographs of the meeting aboard the Augusta. Having researched these original images with the Imperial War Museum, these images are close to those taken by the official photographer, but from slightly different angles, and are previously unrecorded. The musuem suggested they may have been taken by Mr Prettyman himself. Also included in this collection is a fine photograph of Churchill in typically resolute pose, signed in the mount and with a short note mounted next to the phot on the Prime Minister's stationery reading 'Arthur Prettyman with Mr Churchill's compliments Washington 1943'. This note appears to be in a secretarial hand but the signature under the photograph is quite genuine. Altogether a superlative collection of Churchilliana.
