Description There is a book plate pasted to the flyleaf. The jacket and the flyleafs have been marked by sticky tape which has left a brown stain. The textblock is tight and clean. CAIN'S BOOK is the second novel of Alexander Trocchi, who has become familiar to the public largely through his outspoken debate with Hugh MacDiarmid at the 1962 Edinburgh Writers' Conference, when he defended the internationalist viewpoint in contemporary literature and the values of the 'beat generation'. Glaswegian-born Trocchi, an Honours Graduate in Philosophy from Glasgow University, has lived principally in Paris and the United States since 1950. He founded the magazine Merlin published in English from Paris, together with Christopher Logue, Patrick Bowles, Robert Creeley and others who have since become well-known as writers, translators and editors, introducing in its pages almost everybody who have since become prominent in contemporary literature, and at the same time wrote his first novel, Young Adam, which was enthusiastically reviewed in England, France and America. Subsequently, he went to America and became a leading figure in the 'beat' movement, also experimenting with drugs and their effect on creative writing and our understanding of the human predicament. Trocchi has now returned to Britain and is living in London with his wife and child. About this extraordinary novel, which has already been published with great success and hailed as a masterpiece in the United States and several European countries, the author has this to say: 'This work is an act, an exercise in phenomenology, a planting of flags, a moment to moment chart of my own processes in extremity. The identity of the "junkie" (not only a figure of the underground, but the social leper of the nineteen fifties in New York) was consciously chosen. The resulting experience is by definition that of an alien in a society of conformers, a personal cosmology of inner space'. Cain's Book has been highly praised by such diverse writers and critics as Samuel Beckett, Norman Mailer, Maurice Nadeau, Eugene Ionesco, John Phillips and many others for the extreme brilliance of its visual writing and the extraordinary clarity of its insight into the world of drugs. Alexander Trocchi has given a new definition to the familiar figure of the outsider and there can be little doubt that this book will have a profound influence on the new generation of younger writers. Above all, the author of Cain's Book is a stylist of distinction, constantly able to extract a strange contemporary beauty from situations of squalor and misery.
