I always remembered this as being my favourite Carry On of the whole lot and after all these years it doesn't disappoint.
This Carry On from 1963 stars Sid James as a workaholic cab company boss and Hattie Jacques as his neglected wife. In fact she feels so neglected that she secretly starts up a rival taxi company, Glamcabs, calls herself Mrs Glam, and employs as drivers only dolly birds in fetching uniforms. An old-fashioned battle of the sexes ensues as the new firm steadily poaches custom from Sid's male chauvinist crew. When Sid finally discovers that Mrs Glam is really his own missus it seems that a marital split is inevitable. However, events suddenly take a decisive turn. Sid and his all-male cabbies rush to the rescue when Hattie is kidnapped and robbed, and the movie treats us to an old-style multi-car chase before the villains are captured. Then a grateful Hattie reveals to Sid they are going to have a baby. He is delighted, and the movie closes with everyone ready to live happily ever after. This comedy has an old-fashioned feel to it, but is still worth watching if only because of the comfortably predictable performance of the Carry On regulars.Read full review
One of the earlier Carry On Films, filmed in B&W, this is the film about Sid James who plays a Taxi firm owner. He lives for the firm and his wife, played by Hattie Jacques is fed up with being on her own all the time and never seeing him. She decides to set up her own taxi firm, employing only female drivers, using his money which is in her bank account. This leads to a funny chase on how they are going to put these new 'GlamCabs' out of business and stop them pinching their trade. An excellent movie, doubled with an extra disc entitled Thats Carry On, presented by Barbara Windsor and Kenneth Williams. An ideal treat for any Carry On fan.
One of the earlier Carry Ons was written by Talbot Rothwell and was the first of 20 of the series that he penned. It's a rollicking comedy with Sid James and Hattie Jacques as rival taxi-firm owners. Joining in the fun are Kenneth Connor, Charles Hawtrey, Esma Cannon and Liz Fraser.
