Vageeswari Type - Charten 12"x10" Ultra LargeFormat Field Camera , Hardwood Double Extension Field Camera with 1 Holder ~~
~ Auction includes 12x10 Camera and 1 Double Film Holder ~
High quality wooden field camera made to the same pattern as the more common Vageeswari , made of hardwood, light coloured wood , possibly Satinwood. ~
These were beautifully designed and made to a British Governement design specification , originally for use in the far east. FC Charten were a marketing company in Japan, more famous for their superb top quality FC Print Dryer/Glazing machines. Their cameras , most likely made under contract for them by other companies, were made very finely, higher quality finnish , superb chrome, locking knobs have an inner screw to make sure knob do not fall off in transit.
Has double extension, Front standard rise and fall movement , front and rear tilt. Some rear sideway swing. Reversable back allowing horizontal and vertical format .
The camera is in excellent working order , nice condition. I always dismantle into main sections , clean the metalwork and wood, lubricate with wax polish moving parts. See http://photobucket.com/Vageeswari.
Woodwork is in beautiful condition , with very minor marks one would expect for a camera of this age , this has been polished up by myself, I never refinish the surface, purely try to renovate. Wood could be polished up to a higher standard by the purchaser.
Metalwork is plated brass , with brass focus rack and gear, focus rods in steel. All in good order, lovely plating , some pitting only on the rail guide metal strips .
Bellows is made of nice supple leather ,some signs of use and a little crumpling toward front, but in excellent order.

Ideal lenses are - standard approx. 380mm/ 15 inch , wide angle 250mm to 300mm / 10 " to 12". Process lenses are ideal, these are usually of very high quality and can now be found at low prices.
Many Process or old lenses come without shutters, but are ideal for use mounted in front of Sinar shutters attached to a lens panel, see example of Sinar Shutter fitted to my personal Vageeswari Triple with AM Goerz Dagor.
Film/Plate Holders in 12x10 size, these are of the book form folding type, designed originally for glass negatives, they can be used for film by inserting a spacer sheet, ie foamalux plastic sheet or diabond sprayed black. I can supply diabond sheets on request.Holder and spacer sheets available as extras to this listing. See Photobucket link picture , that shows adaption to 10x8, using insert mask, with 10x8 film sheath, or alternatively a 10x8 sheet of diabond - ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Film can be supplied by Banse and Grohmann (Foma film), they stock most ultra large format sizes and will also cut film to customers required size, they will do this to very small orders. www.wephota.de . Iford cut a stock of this size anually, as well as 12x15 and 8.5x15 sizes.
Negatives can be contact printed or scanned, enlarging papers can be used as well as Printing-out-Paper, Platinum paper, or try the new Azo replacement Lodima ( see AZO forum). Also see new Foma Foamalux contact paper.
Film holders are ideal for use with alternative processes , see ~~ www.johnbrewerphotography.com ., John Brewer says these cameras are excellent for Wet Plate See image in photo section , reproduced by permission of John Brewer , taken using wet plate There is a growing interest in the Collodian process (wet plate) producing ultra fine negatives, collodian produces neratives with more lines per millimetre than conventional gelatin negatives. This process requires plate holders as opposed to film holders, the ones supplied are ideal. Holders need to be sprayed internally with protective varnish to protect the holder from silver nitrate.See also www.starcameracompany.com , -maker of adaptor backs, and www.flavioserci.com . See www.studiocarter.com for coating glass plates with liquid emulsion.
Tripod - camera can be mounted on conventional tripod by adaption plates, or mounted on the custom tripod legs as shown in the photos (the photo is of a similar camera , tripod not included in auction), these are lightweight and ideal for landscape work , they absorbe vibration better than metal tripods, and although light in weight the offer 3 position support rather than that of a traditional tripod which is central, for a large camera the 3 position support is ideal for spreading the weight. The camera has it's own rotating tripod turntable built in, which has lugs unerneath which the legs attach to.
I have recently manufactured an aluminium Tripod adaptor plate, see http://s1131photobucket.com/albums/m559/Apo-Lanthar/ULF%20Adaptor , this demonstrates an adaptor, using an aluminium circle cut and mounted under the original tripod mount retaining ring on the camera, 2 discs are cut from the circular plate, these are attached the the plate to give greater depth to the tripod bushes, which are tapped for 3/8" screw, one centrally and the second slightly forward, either or both could be used. Apologies for the slight errors on alignments of screw rivets on this example.
Note : The Picture ~~ of the camera with a Sinar Shutter attached is my own personal camera, and is not for sale, illustrated purely for demonstration of shutter idea. Also the photo demonstrating the use of 10x8 inserts, show a different holder to the one in this sale. .
