Chichester The Cathedral Market Cross And Tower.

The cathedral city of Sussex, like so many others, occupies a Roman site, and has a Saxon history. The foundations of the present cathedral were laid in the reign of William Rufus ; but owing to successive fires much of the present work is much later, and the spire dates from the fourteenth century. This spire is the glory of Chichester : it is 271 feet high, and of better proportions than usual. The original spire fell in 1861, and the present one is a reconstruction. The cathedral is also noticeable for its five aisles. On its north side is a remarkable detached campanile or bell-tower, built by Bishop Langton early in the fourteenth century. Chichester is also celebrated for its beautiful Market-Cross, which stands at the junction of the four main streets, and was erected by Bishop Storey about a.d. 1500..
