The DVD was bought as a present for someone who had missed the Xmas edition as was desperate to know what happened primarily to Bates. The fact that the reduction in running time from the TV 2 hours to the DVD 90 mins was a great advantage. Thought some of the story line was over elaborated but in all thoroughly enjoyed the whole product. Downton is a great period drama, totally believable and one can see why it is so popular. Another series is a must and having visited the Highclere where most of this is shot felt very much part of the series.
Screened, it seems, with a different caliber of film, more cinemascope, and, as well, cutting even closer to the main characters you got to know so far, the Christmas Episode marks a turning point in Downton Abbey. We see former villains grow to be more human, learn to see different aspects in everyone, and just as in life, the holiday season makes us sensible enough to unveil long kept secrets and enables to take a fresh look upon things. Great entertainment that helps you during the hard wait for season three.
Love this series, have them all and it's something you will want to watch again and again. Am very envious of there tree but would need a much bigger house to fit it in! Maggie Smith is the star of the show.

Having missed it when the series was on the TV, I decided to watch series 1 and was hooked. Have now ordered all the series and thoroughly enjoying them. If you like period dramas you will love this. I think they could have made more episodes and they 'jump' a few years between series, and I hope that the rumours are true and that they do make some more episodes.
