Circle of Jeremiah DAVISON (c.1695-1745)

Appears to read C F 1775

A finely painted portrait of an 18th century beauty wearing a blue silk dress, gold shawl and a  medallion to her  décolletage.   Her hair is decorated with pearls and tied back with a blue ribbon.
A label verso bears an attribution to Jeremiah Davison which was probably transcribed from the old canvas when the painting was lined.

Jeremiah Davison was born in England of Scottish parentage in about 1695. Nothing is known of his education or artistic training, but he copied works by Van Dyck and Lely in the Royal Collection.

Davison worked in Edinburgh from about 1737 to 1740, painting the Scottish aristocracy.  There is a known portrait of a woman clutching a portrait miniature of Bonnie Prince Charlie by Davison.  This could be a further example of a Jacobite noble woman displaying her loyalties through wearing a  medallion of the Prince.

Davison died at his home in Leicester Fields, London, in December 1745.

Label with attribution.

CONDITION
The canvas has been lined and cleaned probably in the last 25 years. In common with many paintings of this age there are some small areas of over painting,  in this case to her forehead and neck.  Thankfully, her features appear untouched.  There is a pleasant age related craquelure to the paint surface.

The frame is later but presents the portrait handsomely.
