The Author

author picture

Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat.

In 1986 he and two other reporters wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors that was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize.

After three years Connelly began writing his first novel to feature LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America.

He lives with his family in Florida.

The Novel

In 1993 Marie Gesto disappeared after walking out of a supermarket. Harry Bosch worked the case but couldn't crack it, and the twenty-two-year-old was never found. Now, more than a decade later, with the Gesto file still on his desk, Bosch gets a call from the District Attorney. A man accused of two heinous murders is willing to come clean about several others, including the killing of Marie Gesto. Taking the confession of the man he has sought-and hated-for thirteen years is bad enough. Discovering that he missed a clue back in 1993 that could have stopped nine other murders may just be the straw that breaks Harry Bosch.

Why are maverick policemen so popular with readers of crime fiction? In real life they would probably drive you crazy. In Michael Connelly's Echo Park Detective Kiz Rider, who partners one of the most famous of all mavericks, Harry Bosch, is finding it harder than ever to cope with his increasingly reckless disregard for the consequences of his actions. Working in the Open-Unsolved unit of the LAPD has given him the opportunity to keep going over the files of an old case he himself failed to solve, the disappearance of a young woman. Now a man accused of two murders has confessed to several others, including that of the missing woman, and Harry is devastated to discover that he had missed a clue which could have led to the killer all those years ago. But Connelly's plots are never straightforward, and he keeps us guessing until the exciting and bitter conclusion to this latest episode in a splendid series.
