The Author

author picture

Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat.

In 1986 he and two other reporters wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors that was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize.

After three years Connelly began writing his first novel to feature LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America.

He lives with his family in Florida.

The Novel

It is the sequel to The Poet—something for years I said I wasn't interested in doing but could not avoid once the idea came to me. Harry investigates the death of a cop he once worked with and that leads him into the path of the Poet. Terry McCaleb and Rachel Walling make appearances in this book, and if you look hard enough you'll even catch a glimpse of what Cassie Black is up to.
The Narrows takes its name from the Los Angeles River which about fifty years ago was captured in concrete. Because the river would flood from time to time and wipe out big chunks of the city, they put it into a concrete channel that runs about 50 miles through the city. In some areas it is wide and in some it is narrow. When it rains all the water drains into the river. It gets deep and it starts moving fast. Especially in the narrows. Every year people drown in the narrows. When you grow up in L.A. you are warned early and often to stay out of the narrows. In this story, Harry Bosch chases the Poet and goes into the narrows, literally and metaphorically.
— Michael Connelly

Reviews

'There's a gravitas to the mystery/thrillers of Michael Connelly, a bedrock commitment to the value of human life and the need for law enforcement pros to defend that value, that sets his work apart and above that of many of his contemporaries. That gravitas is in full force in Connelly's newest, and as nearly always in the work of this talented writer, it supports a dynamite plot, fully flowered characters and a meticulous attention to the details of investigative procedure. ...The suspense is steady throughout but, until a breathtaking climactic chase, arises more from Bosch and Walling's patient and inspired following of clues and dealing with bureaucratic obstacles than from slash-and-dash: an unusually intelligent approach to generating thrills. Connelly is a master and this novel is yet another of his masterpieces.'
