Believed to have been worn on the Mir Space Station

Left to right: R.Evald (Germany), V.Tsibliev (Russia) and A.Lazutkin (Russia, seen here wearing the suit).

This Cosmonaut blue lightweight flight suit was manufactured by "Vympel" with Vympel patch, zippered front, zippered pockets, knit collar and wrists and elastic waist. The length of the suit is 58". One lower leg has what looks like minor rust marks on the back, otherwise perfect condition.

Vympel is State Scientific-Engineering enterprise OKB "Vympel". The enterprise was founded in 1963 as Branch 2 of the Experimental Design Bureau OKB-52. In 1965, the enterprise was renamed in Branch 2 of the Central Design Office for Machine Construction, and in 1991 it became the State Scientific-Engineering Enterprise OKB "Vympel". Over the 35 years of its operation, more than thousand unique units, systems and complexes for the purposes of space research and Russia defence capacity strengthening were created. Developed complexes consisting of handling, stand, assembly-joining, pneumatic-vacuum, transport, checkout equipment used when preparing and launching multi-purpose spacecrafts. Since 1994 GNIP OKB "Vympel" has been incorporated in Russian Space Agency.

This type of suit was used in expeditions to Mir Space Station. You can see cosmonauts wearing the suits during their preparation at the Mir space Station ground complex above.

This suit belonged to Flight Engineer Aleksandru Lazutkinu, below and in the photographs above wearing the actual suit.

He graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute with a mechanical engineering degree, 1981; research scientist at MAI, since 14.11.1984 he worked with NPO Energiya; was selected as cosmonaut on 03.03.1992 (NPOE-10); OKP (cosmonaut basic training): 10/92 - 2/94; since February 2010 deputy director of the memorial museum of cosmonautics; since August 2011 director of the memorial museum of cosmonautics.

He was Flight Engineer on Expedition EO-23 to the orbital complex "Mir" in in 1997, which launched on 10 February 1997 on Soyuz TM-25 with Russian cosmonaut V. Tsibiyev and German cosmonaut R. Evald.  Soyuz TM-25 docked with Mir at the forward port on February 12 at 15:51:13 GMT. Following a mission that seemed to consist of an endless series of collisions, breakdowns, fires, and other emergencies, the EO-23 handed over the station and on August 14 entered Soyuz TM-25, which landed in Kazakhstan at 12:17 UTC, 170 km SE of Dzezkazgan. The Soyuz landing rockets failed to fire on touchdown, giving one of the roughest landings experienced by a returning Mir crew.

It would be interesting if the stains on the back lower leg of the suit occurred during the above incidents.

Information and background also provided by Galina Sergeeva, Science Deputy Director, The State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, Russia
