Costing Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Impact on the Individual and Society by Jeanette Walldorf, Anne-Mette Lange, Rasmus Hojbjerg Jacobsen, Anders Sorensen, David Daley (Hardcover, 2015)
The number of people accessing care for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD has increased dramatically over the past few decades. The aim of this book is to investigate if ADHD has a detrimental effect on the lives of individuals with ADHD. The purpose of the analysis is to better understand ADHD and the costs associated with ADHD whether those costs fall upon the individual or the state. The present book finds that Adults with ADHD are performing particularly badly on a large range of measures within educational attainment, occupational status, income, family situation, criminal record, and health. This is the case when they are compared to individuals with a similar background and upbringing, including their own siblings. The disorder is a major problem for many individuals and for society. For Adults with untreated ADHD, the private costs borne by the individual amount to more than 8,500 euros per year. While the public costs constitute an additional 9,000 euros per year, resulting in a total cost of 18,000 euros per year. Even though the study is performed within Denmark it is argued that the results generalize beyond Denmark to most economies.
