Original, vintage, 1950 negative from the Ashley Series archive of photographs (which was produced between 1938 and 1956 by photographer Donald Birkinshaw, see below).

This negative is of Crondall, Hampshire in 1950.

The negative measures 6cm x 6cm approx.

These views come from an extensive archive Library of over 15,000 images, taken between 1938 – 1956 covering views from Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Somerset, Dorset, Isle of Wight and the Isle of Scilly.

The Archive lay un-discovered for many years until 1997, when it was purchased from the Birkinshaw family, and has proved to be a very Rare Archive covering the II World War period, when photographic film and equipment was expensive and hard to find.

The Stunning quality of Birkinshaws photographs covering the small local villages, towns, farming scenes and beautiful South East England landscape are works of art and are being brought back to life for the first time in over 50 years, some images have never been produced.

Please note the ‘mementoes’ logo is not on the actual negative.

Please see my other ebay lots for more negatives from this collection that show villages, pubs, shops, post offices, windmills etc.

If there are any villages (or pubs etc.) that you are particularly interested in please message us through ebay and we will let you know if we have any negatives of that village, pub etc.

Please note: This is an original, vintage negative and not a print of any kind, the image shown here is just representative of what the negative can be used to produce and therefore due to the nature of this item returns are only accepted if the negative is not as described.

If you do not agree to this condition of sale please do not buy this item.

Postage

UK                               £1.50

Europe                        £3.00

If making several purchases please add all your required items to your ‘ebay basket’ and the postage discount should automatically be applied, if it isn’t, a manual refund will be done asap (usually within minutes but dependent on whether I am here or not it may take a little longer), many thanks for your patience and understanding.

Donald Ashley Birkinshaw - 1922- 1988 - (Short Biography).

Donald Ashley Birkinshaw was born on August 29th 1922 and attended Nottingham High School and Whitgift Grammar School, Croydon.

From an early age the countryside, photography and classical music were his hobbies.

His photographs were accepted for county magazines as early as 1938.

He joined the civil service in 1939 working for the Home office, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Agriculture until 1946, the following year he produced his "Ashley Series" of postcards and calendars.

He stopped production in about 1953 as purchase tax made his profit margin too small to continue.

From 1953 onwards he only took photographs for his own pleasure.

Donald never married, living with his mother on the Hog's back near Farnham Surrey until 1970 when she died, he later moved to Wiltshire, Somerset and Cornwall where he died on June 25th 1988.
