Name Bernt Johansson
Subtitle Astonishing Progress
Info Those Swedes who have been able to inscribe their name on the honors list of major international cycling tests are rare. Bernt Johansson is one of these, having won the Olympic road race title in Montreal, 56 years after Harry Stenquist (1920 Antwerp Olympic Games). It was success all the more brilliant for having been obtained single-handed under particularly difficult conditions of rain and a slippery road. For the amateur that he was, this individual triumph represented a peak achievement. It crowned a career already well filled, notably with a world title in the 100-km team race in 1974 also in Montreal and several national titles. But, above all, that achievement earned for its protagonist instant approaches from the professional camp. The many qualities of this blond Scandinavian were not slow in asserting themselves, and they rapidly earned him a place in the sun in the professional milieu, where it is difficult to topple a generally well-established hierarchy. In his first professional season some promising results boosted a growing prize list. Then in 1978 he finished ninth in his second participation in the Italian Tour, an event which his fellow countryman Gosta Petterson had won in 1971. Johansson's rapid adaptation to the rhythm of the professionals, his stamina and his racing judgment quickly elevated him among the international elite. The 1978 Lombardy Tour, in which he was beaten at the sprint by Francesco Moser, gave evidence of very encouraging form and confirmed his astonishing progress.
