I've been collecting dance music and electronica for over 30 years, so as well as the items in my eBay shop I also have more than 15,000 items in stock which I haven't got round to listing yet. Now and again I have a rummage around and dig out some classics, rarities and hidden gems for auction but this week I've decided to part with a very unique and rare item from my own personal collection. I'm doing this because I want to take my 4 year old son, who is autistic, on a special holiday this year. I'm trying to raise the funds by selling a few select items from my own collection until I have enough money to pay for it.
I've been a big fan of Depeche Mode since the heady days of my teens, bopping around to "New Life" at the school youth club and Crocs (now the Pink Toothbrush), in Rayleigh, Essex, in the early 80's. Since Vince Clarke had left the band their second album release was eagerly awaited and on the day of release my best friend, who lived in Basildon, went into Basildon town centre to buy it. He went into Kelleys Radio record store and asked for a copy at the counter. The guy behind the counter asked if he wanted the copy signed and he said yes, but wasn't expecting the band to be out back in the store room, and they come out and signed it for him. Nice touch, we thought at the time, but to be quite honest we probably didn't realise the significance the band would have on the history of electronic music many years later.
The record itself was played many times back in the day, until I realised its potential collectability value, since then it has been stored safely away in my collection in a protective sleeve. There are obviously clear signs of use to the vinyl, with numerous visible hairlines and light surface abrasions. If you really crank the volume up there is some faint background noise but really only noticeable in the dead wax and soft passages, with no major deterioration in sound quality and the vinyl retains a lovely glossy black sheen. I would conservatively grade this at VG+.
The inner sleeve is near mint (NM), no seam splits or any defects worth mentioning, just the faintest signs of abrasive sleeve wear / use.
The outer picture sleeve has a slight printing flaw from manufacture resulting in a faint blue lined band which can be seen on the left side in the skyline (see my photos). The sleeve itself only shows light signs of wear to the edges and spine and the corners are still sharp with just light wear. Hand signed in blue byro by Andy Fletcher, Alan Wilder, Dave Gahan & Martin Gore. I can obviously vouch that the signatures are 100% genuine and they will pass any rigorous testing, they are clear and probably better in the flesh than my photos suggest. I would grade the sleeve at EX+.
This is a stunning piece of rock history, signed by the band, in their hometown, on the day of its release. I'm sure it would look amazing framed and wall mounted.
Although I sell music for a living I'll be honest and say I have no experience in selling autographed memorabilia. I've given my initial guestimated price based on its condition and historic uniqueness, in comparison with what has been sold on eBay previously, but I'm no expert so by all means make me an offer. I will ship Worldwide, fully insured and tracked, and inclusive in any accepted offer price. I will consider all genuine realistic offers and I hope this fantastic item finds a new home with another real DM fan.
