This mastering is apparently quite popular with participants on Steve Hoffman forum, but those guys must be listening on extremely warm/dark sounding systems. My solid state system is definitely tipped toward the warm side but this disc sounds pretty shrill to me. The claim is that this mastering is "less muddy" but if you EQ it (I use Schiit Loki) so the highs are musical rather than fatiguing, the mids are just as "muddy" as, say, the MFSL gold disc, which I much prefer. The reality is, this album was recorded in such a way that it will never be an audiophile's dream. The first few tunes (without Duane) are pretty decent, but once he joins in and the number of overdubbed guitar tracks increases, the quality of the sound, overall, nose-dives significantly. I guess we'll never know what Tom Dowd was thinking. The music is great-- some of Clapton's very best playing, IMHO, so it comes down to personal choice which version one favors. But given the fact that more systems tend to sound bright rather than dark, I don't believe this mastering is a good choice for most listeners. No doubt, others will disagree. Read full review
