Make no mistake about it; Drumheller #1 is about as unique as they come. This debut issue from Riley Rossmo and Alex Link packs it’s own stellar brand of surreal storytelling that is sure to leave you clamoring for more. Needless to say, this is a book that deserves to be on your radar, especially if you have a knack of stories full of bizarre oddities. The book revolves around the story’s oddball protagonist, Drum Hellar, a former botanist turned paranormal private investigator. With the aid of his Harold, his ghost cat companion, the two set off on a wild adventure full of psychedelic drugs, bisexual werewolves, ex-girlfriends and an extremely creepy bogman with the urge to lock lips. Drumheller #1 is every bit as bizarre as it sounds, but in a good way. Miraculously, Rossmo and Link find a way to balance out all of these unusual elements and the end result makes for a pretty trippy, but ultimately entertaining read. The rural setting and dream-like hallucinations of Drumheller #1 are brought to live by an amazing color palette that really sets this book apart from anything else that you’ll find on shelves. Don’t get me wrong, Rossmo’s art is spectacular, but his colors seem to be on another level, particularly during the opening few pages when Drum Hellar is struck by lighting and pops his head into a dreamland in pursuit of a golden peacock egg. Yes, that is every bit as weird as it sounds, but the spectacular colors bring it life rather remarkably and that’s something that just can’t be ignored. It’s fair to say that Rossomo is on the top of his game and this issue is a prime example of what an artist can do when they have complete control over their own creation. Perhaps the most compelling thing that Drumheller #1 offers is the way that it seems to blur the lines between genres. This debut issue is a little bit of mystery, comedy, horror, romance and everything in between. I have absolutely no idea where Rossmo and Link are taking us on this journey, but that’s part of the intrigue that makes Drummheller #1 one hell of a debut issue. Buy the ticket and take the ride!
