Death of a Hero by RICHARD ALDINGTON.

Overall condition: Book near fine. Dustjacket Very Good.

The author joined the British Army in 1916 and was wounded in 1918. Bitingly satirical story of a soldier's tribulations during the Great War, it tells the story of George Winterbourne, an artist. It is divided into 3 books, the first telling of an upbringing in Edwardian gloom, the second of the hero's escape into exciting London society where he finds romance. The third book tells of George's experiences in the trenches of France where he is rapidly promoted due to the high death rate and becomes increasingly cynical. The story climbs to a chilling climax.

The 42nd Penguin book ever published! Recently reissued by Penguin to commemorate WW1, you can buy the first edition here!

VERY RARE and early 1st edition Penguin book published 1936, Number 42 of all Penguin Books published. This book is an iconic Bodley Head edition in outstanding condition (near fine) complete with its dust-jacket in Very Good condition.

Please refer to photos to see condition.

Cover clean, bright and stiff - has been protected by dustjacket. Minimal crumpling to top and bottom of spine. Very top of spine has tiny area which is slightly faded. Has 'reading' crease adjacent to spine down front cover, which can be seen in Photo 2.

Interior book very good, binding tight, pages have mild tanning more marked around page edges.

Dustjacket in very good condition; may be viewed inside and out in my photos.

This is a very rare and very early Penguin in exceptionally clean near fine condition, complete with a Very Good + dust-jacket.
