Rise Again and the 'Spirit of
Marco'– special edition No.58 Marco Simoncelli Fender guitar
It was on 23rd October 2011 when Martin, the lead
singer of The Rainband, came home after watching his team Manchester City beat
Manchester united 6-1. Spirits were high that day and Martin went straight
round to see his nephews to celebrate the win. When he walked through the door
he expected a joyful reception from Jake, Rocco and Nathan who are big
Manchester City fans. Instead they were in tears. It was that day that Marco
Simoncelli had crashed and lost his life at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The
line in the song ‘I can see it in your eyes’ was born from that point. Martin’s
family are big MotoGP fans and the kids were big Marco fans. Ironically it was
the same day that The Rainband were contacted by Silverstone to play at the
British MotoGP race the following July so it all started from that point.
The band later found out that there
was a Foundation set up by Paolo (Marco’s father) and Kate (Marco’s fiancée),
and Martin contacted them to ask if the band could dedicate the song to Marco
at the British MotoGP – that was it. Paolo and Kate asked to hear the song, and
when completed The Rainband sent it through and the reaction was great. They
loved the song, there had been many songs dedicated to Marco in Italy but they
were all sad on reflection. The Foundation at the time wanted an anthem that
was fitting in the spirit of Marco, and Rise Again was that spirit. The
Rainband then contacted James Toseland – double World Champion of World
Superbikes who is also a very talented piano player and musician. Even without
hearing the track, on the mention of Marco and the Foundation James said he
absolutely wanted to get involved. The band met up with James shortly after at
the famous Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire to record the final version of the
song. James came up with the piano line that underlines the whole song and
within one day Rise Again was cut. The resulting song with James’s piano
certainly captures the spirit of Marco and the band have released the track
with all profits going to the Marco Simoncelli Foundation.
After the song was finally mixed
Martin flew over to Italy and visited Paolo and Kate in Coriano, to discuss
Rise Again and what The Rainband could do to help the Foundation. The
Foundation was well known in Italy but didn’t have a presence in the UK. Paolo
only had one request, and that was to raise awareness of the Foundation in the
UK. Martin agreed and Rise Again was finalised with the video being shot in and
around Coriano. Paolo and Kate even gave the band permission to use some
private photos and videos never previously released to use in the video. The
resulting song and video is a true dedication to Marco and certainly in the
