~ Early Victorian 1828 Pattern Officers Shako Of The Foot Guard Regiment ~

The body of the bell top shako is made of black beaver skin with a black patent top, front peak and 'V' shaped reinforcement on the sides.

The gilt front plate has a white metal large gilt rayed star with the Queen's crown above it. On top of the star is attached the enameled Order of the Garter. Above is the red over white woolen pompom with gilt brass support.

The gilt chin scales are backed with black velvet and have circular ear bosses decorated with oak leaves.

Both the leather sweat band and silk lining are red. The peak lining is black leather.

Inside, under the top flat, is the original hatters paper label that reads 'Hawkes Mosley & Sons, Hatters to His Majesty The Prince of Wales, No. 14 Piccadilly, London'.

~ Dimensions ~

The shako is 7 inches (17.8 cm) tall (not including the pompom and peak) and has a lower end diameter of 7.5 inches (19 cm). It weighs 780 grams.

~ Condition ~

The shako is in glorious condition for its age.
The leather has become crackled the top and peak. Also part of the peak's edge is worn.
The gilt components retain their bright appearance and are in good shape.
The badge is in good order, the enamel appears to be complete but there are some areas of old metal polish in the recessed area of the blue background. The silver star and badge have a dark aged patina.
The sweat band and lining have the expected signs of wear but they are in very good condition without tears.
The chin scales are excellent.

This museum level piece displays well.
