G&L/ Leo Fender/ Musicman/ Precision Bass

No. of Strings:

4 string

Up for auction here is my 1981 G&L L1000 bass which apparently Leo himself considered his finest ever (not this one itself, obviously. That would be daft. Although he may have done - who can tell?).
Made in the first year of production, G&L were the last company Leo Fender was involved with and the L1000 was his take on the ultimate Precision bass.
It's a great instrument which oozes quality and class from headstock to strap button. Quality components throughout - nickel-plated Schaller tuners, faded to a nice patina, beautiful ebony fingerboard, dark and close-grained with pearl dot markers, gorgeous maple neck which has yellowed and darkened wonderfully and shows a good amount of flaming and what appears to be one piece of mahogany for the body, although I may be mistaken on this - if there is a join, I can't see it. The body has been somewhat inexpertly stripped and varnished by a previous owner, sadly, and would probably have been a tobacco sunburst originally, if the one I had in the 80's was anything to go by.

As for playability, it's vintage Fender all the way- 43mm/ 1-3/4'' nut width, nice action - I have it set boringly medium and you may want it higher or lower to taste - the depth of the neck is about perfect - not too skinny and not too fat - you know what I mean... It's difficult to put into words but if you've a liking for Fender basses of a certain age, and if you're reading this I suspect you have, then this fine bass will not disappoint or surprise.

What might surprise is the sound - it's about the liveliest, most vibrant instrument I've ever played. It's got all the woody warmth of a Precision but with extra width and depth and, with the 3 way switch in the back position, more bottom than you could shake a stick at, all easily controllable by means of the passive and beautifully simple and intuitive volume, bass and treble controls. The pickups on these basses are absolute monsters with 8 whacking great adjustable pole-pieces and again Leo thought them his finest, apparently. All the classic tones are here -from a good approximation of Rickenbackeresque clank to a nice smooth Jazz bass and most points inbetween. It's a very versatile bass.
It comes in proper G&L moulded case complete with key and if you can't collect in person I'll package it up nice and bonny in a proper guitar box with loads of padding.I will organise a courier if absolutely essential, but would prefer you to organise your own so you might sort out insurance etc. Mail me if you need my postcode to get a price on this.

I think I've covered everything - there's loads of G&L stuff on the site at the bottom of this page - as much as you could wish to know and more, probably - though please feel free to message me if you have any questions at all. I am in Padiham near Burnley in Lancashire if you want to see the bass in person before bidding. As for payment, I would prefer cash on collection or a direct transfer of funds if possible
