This is a stunning 175 Jazz guitar, made in Japan in the 70's. JoWhite, the luthier who has just set up this guitar, and is an official Gibson repairer and service center, told me that it is virtually identical to 175's of that time, and of the same quality. The woods in it are top quality, and have aged more beautifully than the pictures show.
El Maya guitars are the superior brand of Maya guitars, using top grade woods and hard-wear. This guitar will have been made in their Chushin Gakki factory. It has a 3-piece neck which Jo said was preferable in these guitars for its strength and stability. It has a new high quality Gotoh metal bridge that Jo put on it, and I have the original wooden bridge that will be included with the guitar. All in all, it is a top drawer Japanese 175.
The guitar plays beautifully. Jo did a full set-up, including levelling and crowning the frets perfectly, tuning the guitar, setting up the action and intonation, truss rod adjustment, nut adjustment, servicing the electrics adjusting and balancing the pickups, and gluing 2 very small bits of binding. (see photos). He said the glued binding can be pulled in to make the work invisible if required at a later date, but is perfectly fine as is. Joe said this type of work is very common on this type of guitars, including Gibsons, and is not a problem. He has put new d'addario chrome flatwound 11 gauge strings on it, and they will last for a long time. I will include Jo's service record in the sale.
The lower bout is 15.75". The neck is 43mm at the nut and 53mm at the 12th fret. The neck is a slim C-shape. The pickups are the original Alnico 5 humbuckers, and are of very high quality. The frets are perfect, the action is medium low. The guitar has a hard case.
Cosmetically it is in stunning condition. There is a tiny mark near the bridge, a tiny mark near the scratch plate, a few marks on the binding at the lower bout lower edge, and two almost invisible marks on the head of the neck. There may be a few more tiny marks that i haven't noticed. All in all for its age this guitar is excellent! it has definitely spent its life in it's hard case.
