Empire Troubadour 698 Turntable
Grado G Cartridge
Formerly known as Dyna-Empire in the 50’s then taking on the Empire Scientific name a few years later, Empire is an audio company well remembered for their advanced Troubadour turntables, high-end phono cartridges, & Grenadier speaker systems. This US based company prided themselves in introducing distinctive components to the marketplace that not only performed to a high level, but contained a style that set them apart for the pack.
Originally introduced in 1976, the Troubador 698 was one of Empire’s shinning achievements. It is a masterfully engineer turntable with an eye-catching functional design, though its beauty is a far 2nd to its ability to reproduce the record with amazing fidelity. When released it exceeded every broadcast specification for professional playback equipment and almost 40 years later it is still outperforming many of the top esoteric modern turntables on the market. Rotation is extraordinarily stable and quite. As you would expect it has extremely low wow & flutter and an almost nonexistent rumble. There are only two moving parts, a powerful hysteresis synchronous motor and a heavy aluminum turntable platter both individually dynamically balanced to the peak of perfection. Other features and functions of the 698 include:
Empire designed a brand new arm for the 698. The arm moves effortlessly on 32 jeweled, sapphire bearings. Vertical and horizontal bearing friction is a mere 0.001 gram, 4 times less than it would be on conventional steel bearings. It is impervious to drag. Only the calibrated anti-skating and tracking force you select control its movement. The aluminum tubular arm, dramatically reduced in mass, responds instantly to the slightest variation of a records movement.
A self-cooling, hysteresis synchronous motor drives the platter with enough torque to reach full speed in on third of a revolution. It contributes to the almost immeasurable 0.04% average wow and flutter value in its specifications.
The two piece, 7 lbs., 3 inch thick, die cast aluminum platter is dynamically balanced. Once in motion, it acts as a massive flywheel to assure specified wow and flutter value even with voltage varied from 105 to 127 volts AC
The Suspensions System
Piston damped, 16 gauge steel coil springs cradle the arm and platter
The Main Bearing
The stainless steel shaft extending from the platter is aged, by alternate exposures to extreme high and low temperatures preventing it from ever warping. The tip is then precision ground and polished before lapping it into two iolite, self-lubricating bearings, reducing friction and reducing rumble to one of the lowest figures ever measured in a professional turntable
Electronic Soft Cueing
A light touch of the two contact button and the tonearm electronically lowers/raises feather soft.
End of Record Lift
When the end of the record is reached, arm automatically raises.
And Much More!
Hysteresis Synchronous type, self cooling high torque with inside-out rotor, locks in on AC line frequency, maintains speed accuracy with zero error, dynamically balanced

Turntable has been tested and it is operating nicely. The cueing is working as well as the end of record lift. Belt is brand new and of the exact spec as the original. There is a slight hum evident through speakers when record is not playing, probably a ground issue. The lighted plastic tonearm rest has a broken prong on it. Tonearm is missing one of four screws that keeps the plexiglass cover on the anti-skating adjustment, the three remaining screws keep it in place fine. Though this anit-skating adjustment is very stiff, but still moves. Turntable is clean, there is some minor discoloration on the metal finish. Wood case has some minor scratches. Stylus looks good
