Cup Winner’s Cup Final 19th May 1971 – Chelsea FC v Real Madrid, Karaiskaki Stadium, Athens – Programme + Ticket + Travel Documents + Souvenirs.
This is a great item that I was lucky enough to purchase recently. On Wednesday May 19th 1971 Chelsea played Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final at the Karaiskaki Stadium in Athens. (The match was drawn and replayed two days later – when Chelsea won). Somebody who went to the Final saved his Programme, match Ticket, and also various mementoes of the trip, including guide books, leaflets, rosettes, and items from his flight.
The Programme measures approx 9½” x 6¾” and contains 36 pages that are printed in Greek, English and Spanish. It shows just minimal signs of handling – and although it was loosely folded (probably to go into a jacket pocked) there is NO heavy crease down through the middle – just a slight hint of a fold-mark that can only really be seen when you hold it at an angle. There is no writing anywhere and no rips or grazes. The two staples are not rusted at all. The Ticket measures 4¼” x 3¾”. It looks to be half of what the whole ticket would have been – and has been carefully torn along the perforations. The other half would have been given to the turnstile attendant on the day. It shows the Cup Winners’ Cup and has the details of the seat number etc, although mostly it is printed in Greek. There is a printed number 2569 and also a hand-written number N 255. The back has (half) a map of the stadium. It has some creasing (probably from being stuffed into a trouser pocket at the turnstile) but is complete with no rips.
The man who went to the Final went with a company called Four S Travel Ltd of London W.C.2. As well as the Programme + Ticket he saved an envelope of items from the company that includes an information sheet about the Match and about Athens, including an itinerary and suggestions on how to fill your spare time during the two day trip. The envelope for booking excursions has not been used. There is a good-quality guide booklet of Greece / Athens, a card that shows details of the Seaside Hotel Milano (printed in English and Greek), and a couple of cards that are printed in Greek. I suspect that one may be for a Taxi company? There is a booklet that is printed in Greek that I cannot make anything of other than it advertises some sort of translation device. And the most attractive item/s are two identical card / ribbon Rosettes that have the words 4S Chelsea on them. I think the idea was to wear them for identification and keep together as a group. One is perfect and the other shows slight signs of handling – so I guess this one was worn.
And there are also a small group of items from Court Airlines. There is the 24-page flight information (and advertising) booklet, and some unused sachets of Tate & Lyle Sugar (packaged for the airline), a Courtair Eau de Cologne Towelette, and Maxwell House Sprinkle for Coffee and Tea. Also he has saved some Greek sugar sachets.
I know that most of these items will not be of interest to anyone who specifically collects football programmes, but I thought it was interesting that the man saved everything as it must have been quite a memorable trip for him. I bought the items from a lady who says her Dad went to the match and they found this bundle in a cupboard after he had died a few months ago. There was one other item that I have decided to list separately – the smaller Chelsea Official Programme for the match, that I guess was sold at Chelsea rather than at the stadium in Athens. I have listed it separately this week.
It is impossible to be an expert in all realms of collecting, and I am honestly representing this item to the best of my knowledge and ability. If the item has a fault then I have mentioned it. I ask that you read the description and examine the photos carefully. I also encourage you to ask any questions you may have during the auction to help clarify identification or condition, as I may inadvertently omit information that you as a collector feel is important.
If after you receive the item there is any problem at all please let me know BEFORE leaving feedback or leaving a low Item As Described rating. If you do not let me know of a problem I have no way of knowing what may have been wrong and I really do want to sort it out.
I am not able to provide scans of paper items and I have no facility to record / copy any records.
Rather than click on the See Other Items link, if you click on either the blue Door symbol or the words Oldvan's Shop you will see my auction items and my Buy It Now items split into various categories which will make browsing easier! e.g. 7" single records, LP's, Books, Toys etc etc. You will not have to wade through hundreds of items that you are perhaps not interested in.
CONDITION. The majority of items that I list are between forty and sixty years old. Some are older and some may be a few years younger. I have described the condition of the item in my text but where applicable I have also ticked the 'used' box as even where an item is 'perfect', it is very old and logic says it must have been handled and probably used at some time over the decades!
ALL of my AUCTION ITEMS are now listed with basic / second class POSTAGE INCLUDED in the UK.
Despite the Free P&P notice shown on this listing it is not actually free to post of course! I have to pay to post them and each week / month / year I pay many thousands of pounds to my local post office. But for UK bidders the price you see at the end of the auction is the total price you pay. If by some remote chance anyone out there - including the Bods at eBay who came up with the Free P&P notice - can tell me where you really can post items for free I would really LOVE to know.
DELIVERY TIMES. Although I have ticked the Royal Mail 2nd Class Standard option, please note that this service is reliable and often is unexpectedly fast. Many customers receive their item within 48-60 hours of paying, and so please disregard the 'estimated delivery time' stated near the top of this page - which I have no control over.
I have also listed other faster options for UK postage (First Class Recorded Delivery + Special Delivery is available) and also various options for overseas buyers that are stated when you click on the P&P Tab.
Worldwide Postage / Shipping.
Upate - April 2014 - After absorbing last year's postal increases into my costs, the latest prices released by the Royal Mail mean that I have to increase some of my prices slightly.
IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BIDDING ON MORE THAN ONE ITEM PLEASE CONTACT ME IN ADVANCE FOR A QUOTE.
I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO COMBINE SHIPPING AND WITH THE NEW ROYAL MAIL PRICING BANDS MANY ADDITIONAL ITEMS WILL EFFECTIVELY HAVE FREE POSTAGE. In the case of 7" singles there will be a small charge for a second one but third and fourth records can go for no extra money. Also - please see my discounts for Fixed Price / Buy It Now records.
IF YOU WIN MORE THAN ONE ITEM PLEASE WAIT FOR AN INVOICE BEFORE PAYING as I WILL DISCOUNT SHIPPING WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
TRACKING NUMBER. If an item sells for more than £40, (or for a package that has a total value of more than £40) it will need to be sent with a Tracking Number - the Royal Mail's International Signed For service. This costs an additional £5 and that price will be added so that both you - the Buyer - and myself are covered under the buyer protection policy.
PACKAGING. Please note that all of my items are well-packed in either board-backed enveloples, thick card or in boxes, and then wrapped in good quality brown paper. I do not make any separate charge for packaging materials - everything is included in the final price. Many of my feedback comments mention my good packaging and I will of course continue to meet my own standards.
UK WINNERS - I still accept and am very happy to receive cheques and postal orders as payment methods, as well as PayPal.
OVERSEAS BIDDERS - Payment is to be made in GB Pounds, as the item is listed in pounds. Please use PayPal via the link on the completed auction page. If you do not use PayPal and want to mail payment you MUST contact me before bidding so so we can agree the payment method in advance.
If you are in Italy and you want to bid on this item please contact me at least two days before the end of the auction.
