Acorn Atom 8k Rom 2k
Ram – Museum Quality
What you are looking at
is an extremely rare acorn atom. This is museum quality example of
this rare computer. It looks like it was manufactured last week.
There is no scratches, discolouring or extra holes drilled into it of
any kind. It still has its protective film over the keyboard surround
and rear plate.
Acorn Atoms are a rare
computer anyway as, they were sold in the early 1980's. This was the
early days of computing so these machines were ideal for
experimenting on. As a result, people removed the voltage regulators
to allow a bigger power supply to be used to add more chips. They
would put holes in the case to help vent the regulators if they kept
them in. They'd fit switches, LED's, etc. Due to overheating the
backs of the computer sometimes melted. Also the the plastic they
made from yellows horribly after a short time.
To find an Acorn Atom
in any condition working or not is rare. They do appear from time to
time on ebay but it's not like the ZX spectrum or BBC where several
examples will come back. If you are lucky there may be one or two if
any.
To find an Acorn Atom
that is working is rarer. To find one that looks good and still in
the original factory packaging (not the usual plain cardboard box) is
extremely rare. To find one that looks brand new is unheard of.
This has been the pride
of my collection for a while now. This computer took me a long time
to track this one down and very good money was paid for it.
It is a good investment
piece and I originally bought it to sell later but due to the current
financial climate, it is up for sale.
As well as the
computer. It also comes with all the original books and
documentation. Again this is all in excellent condition and has not
been heavily thumbed through. The documents included are:
- The Atom Error code/
character code card
- Programs for the Atom
(a catalog of the software available)
- Atomic Theory and
practice (The main user manual
- The Atom Technical
manual
- The circuit diagram
- Atomic Theory and
practice Typed errata to second edition dated 8/1/81 sheet
The polystyrene packaging
is complete and intact which again is rare. It does have a few marks
on it but again these are minimal and rare to see in this condition.
You will also note that there is no place for the power supply to be
stored. I assume that this is because it was bought separately.
The outer box is intact
with no rips or tears. As you can see from the photos, it does have a
few scuffs from wherever it has been stored before I obtained it.
Again I have yet to see another box in this good a condition.
As you can see from the
photos. This is a factory assembled basic Acorn Atom with matching
documentation and box. My assumption is that it was a returned unit
that has sat in a store room before being sold off to a member of
staff who has kept it in boxed condition.
The computer is an
Issue 5 motherboard, it does power up and all the keys work. I have
not attempted to load any software as I try to handle it as little as
possible. There is a faint line over the right hand side of the
screen but every command tried seems to work fine.
Any questions are
welcome and I am open to offers. Due to the price, postage is free in
the UK and will be reduced for outside the UK.
It does also come with an original Acorn Atom Power supply (8V 1.8A)
