THE PURCHASE PROCESS

Did you know that most number plate dealers only actually own a very small percentage of the plates they advertise? As a result, they often take weeks or even months to process a number plate sale. This is usually because of the delays caused by removing number plates from seller's vehicles and the dealers insisting on carrying out the paperwork (by post) in order to prevent owners and buyers from getting in contact with each other.
At Dream Plates we work differently. We personally own every single plate we advertise - so never have to deal with any third party sellers. Most of our plates are held on retention certificates, which means that if you come and see us in Sidcup and pay for a plate in person, we can assign it to your car immediately - because we have a DVLA Local Office just down the road from our own office!

PAYMENT
We accept most types of payment except credit or debit card. The most popular options are cash, cheque or wire transfer. If paying by cheque we require six working days for the payment to clear before we release the retention certificate.

THE CERTIFICATE
As soon as we've received cleared payment we will either hand or post the Retention Certificate to you. Assigning it to your vehicle is a very simple process, requiring no specialist skills or knowledge, it is detailed below.

ASSIGNMENT
If the number you're buying is held on a Retention Certificate (as is the case with most of our plates) to assign it to your vehicle you can either: A) attend any DVLA Local Office in person with the required documents (detailed below) and the DVLA Local Office will assign the number immediately*, or B) you can post the documents to your nearest Local Office and they'll handle the assignment by post. The DVLA Local Office will issue you with a new tax disc and new MoT certificate. They will retain the V5 document and the DVLA in Swansea will issue you a new one by post - this usually arrives within three to ten working days, depending on DVLA workload at the time.
If the number you're buying is held on a vehicle (as is the case with a few of our plates), there will be a small delay (usually no more than a week or two) between payment and us obtaining the Retention Certificate. A slightly faster option in that instance is that we transfer the number directly to your vehicle, rather than via a certificate - it's totally up to you.
If you'd like us to handle the assignment or transfer, we're are more than happy to do that for no charge. If we're handing the assignment for you, we'll need your: vehicle's V5, valid MoT certificate and we'll need to know the tax expiry date. Note that your vehicle must be taxed and MoT'd in order to assign a number.
*If the vehicle you want to assign a plate to already has a personal plate which you would like to retain, the retention application will have to be processed before your new number can be assigned. You can apply for both the retention of old plate and the assignment of the new plate to happen at the same time, but the DVLA will not actually process the assignment application until the retention application is completed - this usually takes one to two weeks.

DOCUMENTS
Documents you require in order to assign a number to your vehicle are: 1) the signed Retention Certificate, 2) the receiving vehicle's V5 (log book) and 3) the vehicle's MoT certificate. Note that the vehicle must be taxed.

RETAINING OR TRANSFERRING YOUR CURRENT NUMBER PLATE
If you already have a personal number plate that you would like to put on a certificate, this has to be processed before the DVLA will assign a new number. The DVLA currently charge £80 to transfer a number plate to a different vehicle, or £105 to transfer it to a certificate for 12 months. Retention certificates can be renewed up to three years ahead at a cost of £25 per year. WHO DOES THE PAPERWORK?
As has been described above, assigning a number to your vehicle is very simple and most of our customers complete the assignment themselves. However, if it's something you're not comfortable doing, we're more than happy to handle the paperwork for you, free of charge.
