FIRST TO DAMASCUS

The Great Ride & Lawrence of Arabia

By Jill, Duchess of Hamilton

Published by Kangaroo Press

2002

First Edition

Illustrated

230 pages

Early on the morning of September 30th, 1918, the men of the Australian Light Horse were the first to enter the outskirts of the historic city of Damascus. 12,000 men and horses had taken part in the 'Great Ride' covering nearly 450 miles of desert and mountain in 12 days to reach Damascus. The Ride has been described as the "greatest exploit in the history of horsed cavalry", and was one of the pivotal events leading to the end of World War 1. But why has Australia's role in the taking of Damascus been largely ignored by history? Contrary to the story depicted in David Lean's epic film 'Lawrence Of Arabia' and Lawrence's own book, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, the Australian cavalry arrived ahead of General Sir Edmund Allenby's British troops and Lawrence and his Arab 'Irregulars'. Jill Hamilton was inspired to investigate this important part of our history in a new book called First To Damascus: The Story Of The Australian Light Horse And Lawrence Of Arabia.

Illustrated front cover. Covers in very good clean condition. No inscriptions. Internal pages very good clean condition. Binding tight and square. Overall very good / near fine condition.
