About Gold Filled and Gold Plated Vintage Jewelry
Antique & Vintage Gold Filled Jewelry has the quality look & silky feel normally only associated with solid carat gold! It was crafted to such high standards it was, and still is, classified as Fine Jewelry by many. In fact, it can be very difficult to determine whether a piece is solid gold or gold filled they are so similar in appearance.
The gold creates a shell over the base or frame - the added bonus of a base metal or metal core means it makes it far less fragile than comparable Solid Gold jewelry. The base metal offers strength & durability making denting less likely & coupled with the quality workmanship of a bygone era, Gold Filled jewelry wears comparably to the low carat solid gold pieces of today.
Gold Filled refers to the process of producing jewelry by bonding a sheet of solid carat gold to a precious or semi-precious base metal like brass, copper or sterling, by the process of heat & pressure. It is similar to or the same as Rolled Gold but generally of superior quality.
The mark indicating a piece is Gold Filled is 1/20 meaning the gold is 1/20th by weight of the item. Antique pieces often had a higher gold content prior to legislation. Some are marked 1/10 meaning they are a Higher Grade Gold Filled or Gold Shell, a term commonly used for both 1/20 and 1/10 constructed pieces.
The Gold Filled process is very different to Gold Plating. Modern gold plated items have a thin spray of gold, today referred to as electroplating, which can wear easily due to a number of reasons including oils in the skin, perfumes & soaps. Antique gold plating is usually thicker & of superior quality. Generally speaking, the layer of gold for gold filled pieces is up to 100 times thicker, if not more, compared to gold plating.
Interesting History of Gold Filled Jewelry
Gold Filled is NOT the same as Gold Plating and prior to 1907 was usually not marked or stamped as such until legislation (The Stamping Act 1906) requiring jewelry of Gold Filled construction to be stamped/marked or hallmarked or identified. Even after this time, a piece could be presented in a box or with a tag stating it was Gold Filled in place of engraving the actual jewelry itself.
All of our jewelry comes from estate sales and is not new ~It may have slight wear or scuffs that we don't feel deters from the beauty of the piece~but instead adds to the character and beauty and are common to vintage pieces~so we list it for our dear customers to make the choice
others may not have the same opinon
so we strive to mention everything we do see, and strive to take good photos
we sell vintage jewelry because we love it and all it's minor imperfections which to us reinforces it's history
Almost every piece is difficult for me to sell because have such an affinity with vintage jewelry
it reminds me of my grandmother...my mother...and my own youth
and I want you as the buyer to be as happy with your purchase
We strive to sell what we feel are the nicest pieces in the very best condition
~ but we realize that is still only an opinion ~ our opinion~and it may not be the same as yours
and I have been known to miss things
I really don't mean to let that happen
So Please look at our pictures before bidding~Ask any questions you might have before bidding~and remember....
even if many of the pieces we sell are in new conditon~they are not new
If you expect new...unfortunately for us this is not the site for you
I really thought I would never have to address the Feedback issue,
perhaps it's because we live in such a busy world that many people act first
and never ask questions or if they do ask they don't seem to listen to the answer
I say many, not because I've had many, I've had a few
but I have seen feedback left for sellers that is obviously not thought out
Of Particular concern is the number of customers still not aware of customs duties in their respective countries and think for some reason it's extra shipping charges (postal charges) or it's something that the seller has done that caused the charges
Sellers on ebay have no control what so ever over customs charges
What is charged or whether it's charged or why it's charged
(See Shipping Information)
I would like to ask~ Please ~if you encounter a problem that you feel warrants less than a 5 star rating,
Again ~Please~ let me know before you leave feedback hopefully we can work it out
If I don't know you're unhappy~I can't fix it and I may make the same mistake unknowingly again~
how awful would that be ~ I can only be best for you ~if you help me be best
I always leave Feedback after my customer leaves Feedback for me.
I've worked in sales all my life, and have never felt that only money makes the sale .
It's certainly why we're all here, ( buying and selling) , but there are many things that go into a transaction for me.
I'm sure I speak for many sellers when I say We Love What We Do Here, and appreciate the opportunity to help our families financially and please others at the same time.
Pleasing others is a pleasure and totally makes my day
and when I know you're pleased my feedback response feels more honest
By the way I really do think all my customers are Super Nice!
Thank you so much for listening!
