DESCRIPTION:    for reference please see  Fire and Sea - Scandinavian Glass 1930 to 2000 - Vigier and Pina - Schiffer - Pages 64 and 65 for more signed examples in amethyst, amber and azure blue. The opposite page shows later examples with rounded basal edges.

Absolutely stunning  signed amethyst and purple thick walled cubed vase from the world acclaimed Finnish glass factory of Kumela - founded in 1933 in Riihimaki , incorporating four differing geometric designs surmounted with a gilded latticework filigree metal mount. The vase starts with a square moulded base whereby a large slightly sunken central area is surrounded by a series if fine textural ripples. The piece ascends to form a crystal clear slightly recessed cubed plinth base whose clearly defined square cut corners lay claim to Penti's earlier iconic design. The latter is then surmounted with four rectangles whereby each side is accentuated with four differing stylised geometric elements. The aforementioned recessed crystal clear base is mirrored at the piece's upper reaches whereby a squared recess leads the eye up to the vases square cut mouthrim. The recessed upper region houses the piece's snugly fitting, superlative patterned filigree'd gilded metal mount. The gilded mount itself is embellished with two sides that have been intricately pierced and cut to form two alternative ranks of square portals, each adorned with detailed internal stars. Two opposing sides display this intricately gilded metal patternation whereby their detail continues to partially encase the vase's other two sides. The vase's  metal mount resembles a gold bracelet and is completed with two plain shimmering gilded rectangles. The aforementioned lower and upper recessed elements affords the piece's geometric central areas to stand proud and take centre stage. Each of the four squared fascia's are sublimely decorated with a differing raised and stepped geometric design. The first take the form of two upper and lower semi circular half moon that flank a central design that resembles a Greek E or a Western Z in reverse form. The second takes the form of a large stylised sunset which incorporates a panel consisting of a progression of raised zig zagging steps within a large semi circular frame. The third consists of two sets of raised semi circles whereby each element is distinctively defined and set at differing levels. These semi circles emanate from the vase's crsytal clear base and descend from it;s metal mount. The fourth and final geometric element is composed of two exquisite semi circular raised curtains. Clearly defined segments emanate from the panel east and west side walls whereby both gradually recede in stepped formation to take centre stage. The  four exquisitely moulded panels represent just one of the vase's many strenghts. The piece is equisitely fashioned in amethyst glass has displays a rich and quite enchanting warm saturation. The amethyst colouration is bordered by darker shades of purple whereby lighter hues of fuscia pink are viewed where the glass is at it's thinnest. The vase's weighted base uses the very finest crystal clear Finnish glass that serves to heigten and indeed accentuate the rich almost majestic amethyst and purple colours above. Both natural and unnatural light catch the raised and recessed linear lines of each geometric composition. The latter creates a magical 3 dimensional effect of some beauty. The vase's intricately detailed patterned gold patinated mount adds to sense of theatre whereby the piece evokes a bejeweled orb of the Crown Jewels or a highly prized opulently decorated royal box. Each of the four geometric compositions displays a stylised symbolism that in itself creates a sense of opulence and modernism. Some identical pieces were produced using a silver pattenated mount complete with a Finnish silver mark for the Finnish silver and jewellery designer Turun Hopea. This iconic piece from Finnish art glass artist/designer Penti Sarpaneva was produced in varying sizes and colourways including Amethsyt, Amber and a lighter azure blue. Later examples exhibited rounded corners and more vibrant colours such as topaz wherbey the ornate metal mounts and designers signature were also omitted.

Condition of the vase is almost A1 perfect ,only a tiny  chip on the edge.

The squared geometric vase with four differing geometric symbols are all nibble free, also vase mouth ok.

The vase's gilded metal filigree mount hasn`t  tarnished  with the piece's age and usage.

The vase's moulded textured base has a fine outer rim of ( good ) wear made up of minute tiny and light surface scratches.

The piece measures  8 1/3 " ( 21 cms ) tall, 9,7cmx9,7cm at widest....

The piece is fully signed by the artist and designer - Penti Sarpaneva - Oy Kumela Finland in flowing script.

I have tried find the name of this vase:finally an old design-shop owner told it:"Midnight Sun"
