Frederick George Swaish Sarah Rowland Swaish Portrait Oil Painting x

Free Insured UK Shipping. Part Exchange Welcome. Tel: 01432 357753

Description:
An exquisite portrait, oil on artist's canvas, signed "Swaish", and dated 1910 and framed - approx 49 X 38 inches (124.46 X 96.52cm).

This is an exquisite English School oil dating from the Edwardian period.
The portrait depicts a superb study of the artist's mother. The portrait bears a plaque "Sarah Rowland Swaish - Portrait by her son F.G. Swaish RWA". Married to Sir John Swaish who was Lord Mayor of Bristol in the early 20th Century and whom was knighted in 1920. The portrait is a fine example of the artist's work. Sarah sits in the parlour on a grand carved bergere chair. She is busy crocheting on a small circular table. The light from the window captures her features, this rather formidable woman having a wry smile on her face and slightly raised eyebrow in an amusing manner.

NB: The painting is accompanied by documentation regarding restoration carried out by an associate of the Geneva Art and History Museum in Switzerland with a report by Victor Lopes the recommended restorer in 2005. The frame dates from the late 1940s and bears the "Frost and Reed" fine art label verso. A fabulous painting with wonderful provenance.
The work is signed and dated top left - "Swaish", 1910 for "Frederick George Swaish 1910".
Date:
1910
Artist Biography:

A short biography by the much renowned "Bristol Savages" as follows:- Frederick George Swaish (1879 - 1931) - One of our early members, he lived at Willsbridge near Bristol, the son of Alderman John Swaish, (later Sir John). He was elected an Artist Member in March 1910. He had built a very fine studio at his home there, and was a very close friend of Founder Member B/S E. H. Stacey. In fact B/S Stacey and his wife lived with him for about four years. Showing early promise, he attended the art school of Mr. John Fisher and thence to the Municipal School of Art, where came under in the influence of B/S R. E. J. Bush who encouraged him to apply for a studentship at the Royal Academy. Being successful, he spent five years at Burlington House and then spent a year travelling in Italy, Spain and Germany studying the Old Masters. Returning home, he spent 3 winters in the studio of A. E. Abbey at Fairford where he met up with his old friend Ernest Board. After this he was able to spend more time in the Wigwam and Evening Sketches in our collection indicate his activity in the Studio from 1920 1930. Of a quiet disposition, and a friendly manner, he was noted for his wit and eloquence in any discussion. He also had that habit, so popular with the early members, of pipe smoking. He was very fond of children. He suffered from bronchial trouble and for some years went to Europe to avoid the cold March winds. In 1912 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, but was never admitted a member, although many felt that he should have been. There are four of his works in the Bristol Art Gallery, namely The Darkened Room, The Kiss of Morn, Convalescence, The Triumph of Harlequin. There is also a fine example in the Council Chamber, for which he was commissioned by the Corporation, The Building of the Keep at Bristol Castle. In these days also he became a member of the Hanging Committee at the R.W.A. He then directed his attention to portrait painting and produced many masterpieces. First and foremost of these is the Bongie portrait which will always remind us of them both. Others of interest to Savages are of his father Sir John Swaish, Mrs H. H. Wills, and Fred Weatherly K. C. The last named is of double interest, first it is the only portrait of this eminent man and secondly it was purchased by the Savages and presented to the Art Gallery. In 1931 he went abroad as was his custom and, in April the following year, was suddenly taken ill and died from heart failure. The coffin was brought home and was buried in Canford Cemetery. We have ten of his framed works and about thirty of his evening sketches. (Bristol Savages)
Framing:
Later classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
The oil is mounted on a stretcher.
Condition:
The painting is in excellent condition for its age, having been relatively recently professionally restored.
