Having purchased "Ragged Kingdom" previously i was slightly disappointed with this earlier offering as it doesn't reach the heights of that disc. Good songs and performances but not an album i would listen to on a regular basis. Best track is the final cut - Finisterre- but a much better and sublime version is available on the"Ashore" album. The backing musicians on that disc are outstanding and totally sympathetic to a recording which, in my opinion only, reflects June at her best. On "Freedom & Rain" the exquisite voice which is June Tabor seems somehow just part of the group sound. Again in my view i think she is at her best interpreting traditional songs rather than contemporary music and some of the tracks on this album do not add anything to the original versions.

For the most part I really enjoy this album. A couple of tracks, All Tomorrow's Parties and Mississippi Summer don't quite do it for me but Susy Clelland and Dives and Lazarus more than make up for it.
