Hey there fellow luthiers, guitar players and tinkerers,
We now offer all of the direct-from-the-workshop tools and supplies that we've developed and been using here for years.
Another pro quality item we've made available to you is the
Ultimate Fret End File.
This is the only file designed from the ground up to ONLY do fret ends.
**Update** If you check out the feedback on these you'll find that people are loving them -
In fact, Fender just purchased a bunch of these for the shop.
Even so, we've gone ahead and made numerous refinements:
A wider bottom surface so it glides even more smooth and stable on the fingerboard.
Longer, thicker handle for better comfort and control.
Longer cutting surfaces so it is even more versatile and can be used at more different angles.
We originally made this after years of frustration with the underwhelming standard tools used for the purpose. Well after so many people asking for these, we finally got around to making a batch for you.
The biggest challenge I have with the typical "fret end file" - just a modified 1/16" wide by 1/8 tall "Pilar" file - is they tend to topple over.
A pilar file is one where the narrow edge is ground "safe" (no teeth) so it can ride along a surface without damaging it. This may sound ok so far, but since the corner of the file where the safe-ground bottom meets the side teeth is so sharp AND narrow, when it topples over,
it can very quickly dig a groove right next to the fret end. 1/16" is just not wide enough to create a stable platform to ride along the fingerboard surface.
It is difficult to capture the details of the Ultimate Fret File in the pics below. Most of them were taken while looking through the magnifier lamp over my bench - My camera's not great, and a photographer I'm not... bear with me :-)
This file features:
1/8" wide safe ground edge, which is double the width/platform of the usual file. Far safer for your fingerboard - especially maple.
Safe ground top edge with rounded corners, so you don't gouge the fingerboard as you go up and over the top of the fret end to the other side.
"Ski Tip" end with rounded corners - great for working on the frets over the guitar body without scratching or denting the finish or wood.
Double-cut teeth, for clean consistent cutting in any direction.
Swiss-made, super-high quality! These will give you years of service.
These are super-precision tools, and should be treated as such - not just thrown in the toolbox, so we include a cool protective, re-useable carrying case.
We have these in very limited supplies - they're time-consuming to make and they won't last long, so grab yours now.
We always give a combined shipping discount on multiple purchases!
So you will pay little or nothing above the shipping cost of the largest item.
For example, if you purchased a Precision Sanding Beam, an Ultimate Fret Hammer and a fret file,
USPS Priority would look something like this:
Sanding beam $8.55, Ultimate Fret Hammer $2, fret file $0, fret guards $0. If it doesn't make the box bigger or (much) heavier, then we don't charge you for it.
For our international customers - on higher value items like these, we specify USPS Priority.
It's quicker and safer than First Class and very inexpensive for the level of service that you get.
(First Class has zero tracking - so if it gets lost or delayed, neither you nor I will be able to find it).
A typical shipment (using Europe as an example) would look something like this:
As many smaller items that can be stuffed into a 9.5" x 12.5" (24.1cm x 31.75cm) "fat" envelope is only $16.
This could include fretwire, a fretting hammer, fret files, an un-filled neck rest etc - basically anything except for our sanding beam.
Don't worry - the package is padded and/or stiffened and reinforced where needed, so your items will arrive in good shape.
We can usually ship a fairly large box - a good sized order weighing up to 2lbs - for $29.75, and it will typically arrive in 5 days
For example, a Sanding beam, Ultimate Fret Hammer, and a precision fret file just make the 2 lb weight.
It's just a few more dollars for anything above 2 lbs.
Packages to our neighbors in Canada are significantly less.
