I bought this book as I had previously read Shiny Pennies and Grubby pinafores by Winifred Foley, which I thoroughly enjoyed, so when I saw Full Hearts and Empty Bellies for sale had to buy it and I wasn't disappointed, as it really is a very interesting book telling of the hardships of bringing up a family in the 1920s and also learning what life was like when money was scarce for buying food and clothes and other necessities. It was interesting to read about life in domestic service and how people put up with things that we wouldn't think of doing today. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this sort of thing.
Disappointed as I had already read & indeed own this book under its original title 'A Child in the Forest'. If I had known it was the same book I would not have purchased it again. Having said that the book itself is worth reading.

This was my fathers and grandfathers life in the forest. Winifred Foley lived next door to them . happy memories .

A great book chronicling one woman's life, growing up in the 1920s, going from the Forest of Dean to the streets of London
