BIOGRAPHY. Born at Blaxhall, Suffolk on 11 February 1846, eldest son and second child of George Thomas Rope (1814-1912) and his wife Anne née Pope (1821-1882). Educated at Ipswich grammar school 1858-1862 where he maintained his interest in natural history. After his school days he spent a year in London studying under William Webb, a landscape and animal painter. In pursuit of material for his collection he travelled extensively in Germany, Holland and Norway but a bad heart curtailed this active phase and his permanent convalescence was spent in compiling his book 'Country Life and Sounds' (London 1915), despite this he lived to the age of 83. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1878-1914, exhibited regularly including ‘View on Westleton Walks’ and at the 1974 Centenary Exhibition his oil 'Blaxhall Common' was on display; and a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Club 1894-1899. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy 'Field Mice' and 'Evening, Early Spring', the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and continued painting until nearly the end of his life. In 1929 while passing over Langham Bridge on the River Alde, his pony and trap ran over an obstruction which overturned his trap causing his death shortly afterwards on 12 December 1929.Bénézit, E., Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, 8 vols, Paris, 1956-61; Johnson, J., and Anna Greutzner, Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940, Woodbridge, 1980; McEwan, Peter J.
