comic grading explained:
Comic book grades can drastically vary in opinion. And not just from individual to
individual, but also from company to company. Therefore, I'll take a little time to
explain how I grade, and offer you a general understanding about what each grade
I give actually means. I should also point out that I do not like to use traditional
grading labels such as "mint" "near mint", ect. as I have found that to one collector,
a "near mint" comic should mean a numerical grade of 9.5, while another collector
may consider 'near mint" comic to be anything above a c8.0 . That is a major
difference in opinion, and I don't want buyers to be confused, I want them
to be happy with their purchases. I have also found that several new collectors find the
usage of "very good" and "good" to be misleading, as a comic graded as "very good"
is in actuality, a comic of 'not so good' quality, according to most of the comic grading
guides. So in an effort to help both the serious collector and the new collector find the
correct quality of comic they are looking for, I have devised a simple grading system:
First, the highest grade I will ever give is "EXCELLENT" . These are generally 'near'
perfect (not pristine mint) with extremely little, to no real noticeable wear. For the most
part, any imperfections would be subtle and faint. There may be a very tiny spine stress
or a very tiny corner ding, however nothing major and nothing that would detract from
a high grade comic. Generally, these would be c9.0 or higher.
The 2nd highest grade given to comics is "OVERALL EXCELLENT" This will be in
generally excellent condition with only very slight wear, nothing major. There may be a
small corner bend or two and there may be a couple small spine stress marks, however
the comic would still be in collectable condition.
The third grade given would be "OVERALL GREAT" This will have some minor wear
that will be noticeable, however nothing major. It will never have any rips, there will never be
any tears, and no writing, ect. There may be some spine creases, they would be small and only
a few. The corners and edges may also have some minor wear as well.
I basically only will sell comics that fall into the above three categories of grades, and
I never will claim or grade a comic as "mint"(M). Please note that comics over 20 years old,
may have the interior pages off-white in color, this is natural and normal. I hope this helps
you better understand how I grade so that you know the sort of comic to expect. In the
event our opinions differ on the condition of the comic you receive, you may always return it,
in the same condition it was received, for a full refund. Also, please note pictures used, may be stock
photos. it would be impossible to physically photograph every single comic that comes threw this store.
Comics generally have either a UPC barcode on the bottom left corner, or a 'direct sales' logo which is usually
a picture of a marvel character. there is absolutely no difference in value between the two, and 99% of collectors
do not differentiate between the two when adding comics to their collections. However, if it is important to you that
the left corner be either the UPC barcode or a direct sales logo, please email first.
