CORNUCOPIA COSTUME

Superb quality, unique, hand crafted, quality costume for the discerning buyer, often imitated, never bettered

GIRLS VICTORIAN URCHIN /MEDIEVAL  PEASANT / TUDOR WENCH 5PC COSTUME

AVAILABLE IN SIZES  9-13 YEARS (SMALLER SIZES AVAILABLE IN OUR EBAY SHOP)

THIS LISTING IS FOR ONE SKIRT,ONE CHEMISE,ONE APRON,ONE  SHAWL & ONE MOP CAP IN THE SIZE OF YOUR CHOICE

This is a very simple, versatile costume which can be easily adapted to suit  various historical periods. It is suitable for school trips, museum visits, book  days and is of such a good quality that it can even be used for everyday wear when no longer needed as a costume. The top can be used for a summer blouse and the skirt could be easily shortened into a basic school skirt.

The costume comprises of :-

SKIRT:- A simple elasticated waist skirt and can be made in a  wide choice of lengths. It is made from a medium weight Panama suiting,

CHEMISE:- A simple chemise /blouse which is made from 100% white cotton & a waist apron also made from 100% white cotton. The blouse has an elasticated neckline, the bottom of the three quarter length sleeves are also elasticated.

APRON:- The apron, which ties at the back will be made approx. 2-3" shorter than the length of skirt chosen. The apron and straps are double hemmed. This one is of a quality suitable for use in the kitchen when no longer required as part of a costume.

SHAWL:-  A triangular shawl made form Royal Stewart tartan fabric, which is a good weight  and although not wool it does look and feel like a wool shawl. It is double  hemmed all round.

MOP CAP:-  100% cotton mop cap trimmed with white lace.

Below are a few ideas to make this costume suitable for various eras by making a  few simple additions which are available in our eBay shop.

MEDIEVAL PEASANT:- Just add a simple coif / hat & remove the shawl and  you have immediately transformed this costume into a Medieval costume.

TUDOR WENCH:- Remove the shawl and add a coif /hat  and a laced bodice /  waistcoat and transform this simple costume into a Tudor serving wench costume.

VERY VICTORIAN

The Victorian era spanned  the reign of Queen Victorian, from 1837-1901 & it was a  period of great  industrial growth &  prosperity.

Things were changing rapidly, it was a time of political & social reform. The  upper classes who were once mainly established aristocracy, were growing in  number as the new wealthy commercial class emerged & whilst  the middle classes were steadily growing there were still large numbers of  working class and for them life was hard and child labour was the norm.

It was an exciting  period of scientific & technical progress, also a period of great advances in  medicine. In 1851 huge numbers of Victorians flocked to the Great Exhibition at  Crystal   Palace in London, eager to marvel at the new inventions of  the age. Novels and poetry were popular and the authors of the day are as well  known today as they were then, The Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens, Lewis  Carroll and Rudyard Kipling to name but a few.

For the well to do  there was leisure time in abundance, picnics by the river, afternoon tea with  friends, opera, theatre and more food than was necessary. At the other end of  the scale the poor lived in squalor, wearing hand me down clothes and living off  a meagre  and limited diet. The poor worked long hours and had little spare  money to do anything with what bit of  spare time they did have.  Life  was hard for the poor and once they'd outlived there usefulness, most were  packed off to the workhouse to live out the rest of their days

.Fashion styles changed  several times throughout Queen Victorias reign, the longest reign of any English  monarch to date and it is one of the most popular eras for costume. From  crinolines to bustles, leg of mutton sleeves and petticoats and corsets that  almost squeezed the breath out of the wearer.

The Victorian era paved  the way for the way way we live in the modern world today, I wonder what Queen  Victoria would think of life today. Would she approve or would she say " we are  not amused"
