This is a movie thad has to do not just with the famous Gallipoli battle and the Australian and ANZAC intervention in World War One, but with the whole of WWI really. Instead of focusing on the battle itself it focuses on the story of two young Aussie volunteers ( Mel Gibson and Mark Lee play their parts ), where they come from, how they get into the army and the path that takes them to Gallipoli and the war against Johny Turk. Their story is in fact the story of a whole generation of young men from all the belligerent countries. These young men in many cases volunteered because their societies initially viewed the war as something glorious, courageous ( have you seen the 1914 images of going to war? ) and indeed deemed cowardly not to go or to sue for peace. The reality of a war fought with old strategies but with far more deadly and brutal technology soon settled in though and meant that these young lads would soon be slaughtered in cruel, sometimes senseless, trench and over the top war. For them and for the societies that bred them it meant a loss of innocence. Gibson and Lee play this part brilliantly, Lee in particular is a portrait of young generosity and innocence while Gibson looks older and wiser, though not as wise as Lee's uncle at the start of the movie, when talking with his nephew about his volunteering to fight. Sceneries, choice of locations, wardrobe, battle scenes and historical accuracy are absolutely top. There are some breathtaking scenes in Australia, Egypt and «Gallipoli» ( the battle scenes were filmed in Australia ). Also room for small funny portraits of the 1915 social ways... Only downside: the electronic music that comes with some scenes doesn't really fit in, the classic one at the end and start of the film is an excellent choice though, sobering and tone setting. The final scene certainly is unforgettable, a potent ending. Yes, «war is different» as Lee's uncle tells him at the start of the movie when talking about adventure... Paulo MendesRead full review
