Garfield - A Fun Fest?
Garfield is back in his second computer animated adventure, Garfield's Fun Fest. Garfield, long-running champion of Cartoon World's Fun Fest Talent Show, believes he can't lose with his winning comedy routine. Problem is, his sidekick Arlene wants to change the act. When Garfield refuses, the duo split. Garfield finds his jokes no longer have an effect on his test audience. Garfield sets off with Odie to the Mystic Forest to learn the lessons of true comedy and aims to retain his title of Champion of the Fun Fest Talent Show After Garfield Gets Real, the first animated adventure, I was looking forward to Garfield's second outing, Fun Fest. The animation for Fun Fest, as in Gets Real, is impressive and realistic. The computer animation does look slightly improved. The same voice cast ... Garfield is back in his second computer animated adventure, Garfield's Fun Fest. The animation for Fun Fest, as in Gets Real, is impressive and realistic. The computer animation does look slightly improved. The same voice cast returns again for Fun Fest which is a good sign. However, on the negative side, the film seems to lack the soul of the Garfield comicstrip. As a huge fan of the Garfield comics and of Jim Davis' works I am disappointed to see that Garfield has been transformed from a comedian into an adventurer and classic Garfield gags seem to be reduced in number in this film. Jon Arbuckle, Garfield's owner, rarely appears in this film which is a shame as he is a major player in the Garfeld comicstrips. There are some laugh-out loud moments when Davis really works his magic, but more of these jokes need to be included in the script, in my opinion. The film's storyline seemed predictable (to me) and somewhat similar to every other fairytale film around. Garfield Gets Real seemed an original idea and it worked well, but I don't think the storyline of Fun Fest does Garfield justice. Despite my criticisms, there is a twist at the climax which was a clever thought from Jim Davis. The film is more suited for young children and I think they would definitely enjoy this film, especially if they had already seen the first one. My final verdict is a 3 out of 5 stars. If you have seen the Garfield Gets Real and loved it then chances are you will like this... but maybe not as much as the original.
