Brand: Gibson
Gibson Mandolin Banjo in very good condition.

When I bought this instrument a few years ago it had only four strings as the then seller wanted to reduce its volume. It is now fully strung with eight (new) strings as was originally intended. If less volume is required for any reason, eg. practising at home, the resonator is easily removed using the four finger and thumb bolts - no tools required. This seems to me a better solution than reducing the number of strings.

Apart from the skin and strings it appears to be all original. Unusually for this type of instrument the fret board does not extend over the (10.5” dia. synthetic frosted) skin but terminates at the 12th. fret.
The number 8544-6 is chalked in the inside of the resonator (but see paragraph below) and also stamped on the inside of the hoop or pot. I have been unable to date the instrument using this number in spite of extensive searching on the internet. I am guessing at the 1930’s but could be way out. A prospective bidder may be more successful in dating it. - Since posting this description I have been informed by a very helpful eBay member that the number dates the instrument to 1927)

I HAVE SINCE RECEIVED A FURTHER COMMUNICATION FROM ANOTHER eEBAY MEMBER WHO  CLAIMS TO HAVE  DONE RESEARCH ON THIS INSTRUMENT AND INFORMS ME THAT IT IS NOT AS ORIGINAL AS I HAD THOUGHT. THE RESONATOR AND TONE RING ARE PROBABLY FROM A DIFFERENT INSTRUMENT AND THE FRETBOARD HAS BEEN SHORTENED SO AS NOT TO PROTRUDE OVER THE SKIN. IN VIEW OF THIS INFORMATION I HAVE TO SAY THAT ALTHOUGH MY ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION WAS DONE IN GOOD FAITH I NOW HAVE TO SELL IT AS "SOLD AS SEEN IN THE PHOTOS" SORRY ABOUT THIS BUT I DON'T WANT TO JEOPARDIZE MY 100% FEEDBACK RATING BY GIVING, ALBEIT IN ALL INNOCENCE, A WRONG DESCRIPTION. However I would say that if this is indeed a "hybrid" then the person responsible has done a really good job, the photos should confirm this, and might do well to turn his or her talents to making instruments of their own.

The tailpiece is engraved “No Knot” and was patented in 1901. It has 5 lugs for anchoring the strings,  possibly Gibson used the same design for their 5-string banjos.

There is some fret wear but nothing that needs immediate attention. The action is low and the tuners work well. The crack on the headstock extending from the upper A-string pillar to the edge is confined to the thin veneer and does not affect the integrity of the main construction of the peghead. It is purely cosmetic and does not affect the tuning or sound. The binding on the lower edge of the resonator nicely matches that on each side of the fretboard.

The case looks to be original. There is scuffing to the outside but the interior is well enough, nicely lined in blue. There is a tiny storage compartment which would hold picks and perhaps an electronic tuner but not much else. I’ll put in a couple of spare picks (but not a tuner, sorry) The catches and handle are all good but there is no key.

On reading the above I realise how complicated it may sound. I have done my best to reconcile my original posting with information since received but will answer to the best of my knowledge any questions.
