29TH MAY 1976
The remarkable GUNNER B.
The feature race, the Cecil Frail Handicap, is won by the Joe Mercer-ridden GUNNER B trained at the time by Geoff Toft.
It was as a 5 year-old, when trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil that he won the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot and Sandown Park's Eclipse Stakes, thereby ensuring his place at stud.
Perhaps his most famous progeny were ROYAL GAIT (Champion Hurdle winner) & RED MARAUDER (Grand National winner.) Interestingly, in 2002 he became the oldest active thoroughbred sire in Europe at the time.
He turned 31 on January 1st 2003, the official birthday of all Thoroughbreds, and was set to continue covering mares. Sadly though, he died peacefully in his box on Saturday 18th January. 2003.
On the undercard for this day's racing was another remarkable 'character' from the 1970s.
UBEDIZZY, who was to go on to develop into a top-class sprinter won the William Hill North-Western Stakes for Steve Nesbitt & Tony Ives.
UBEDIZZY, to put it mildly, was not the most straightforward of individuals; his antics included on occasions dumping his jockey on the way to start, bolting, refusing to enter the stalls, and even attempting to bite his rivals in the heat of battle! He was actually banned from racing in Britain for 'savaging' his groom Andy Crook (now a successful racehorse trainer himself.)
In very good condition overall, minor blemish to back cover, some neat placings & jockey names inserted.
