AS NEW –something bought new and never read (not a lot of those in this house!) Immaculate condition, crisp and free from any defects.
FINE:- almost new (but not ‘crisp’), with no visible or only extremely minor faults (which will be noted) i.e. close to the condition it which it was published.
VERY GOOD:- some slight wear, but nothing obtrusive. There will be no tears on either the binding or the paper. There may be store stamps inside or a label on the cover. This description can sometimes include, in a paperback, very light spine creasing and/or slight page yellowing especially some paperback fiction where the pages tan quickly and the spines show wear easily. In a hardback there may be price-clipping or an inscription inside.
GOOD:– All pages will be present. There may be store stamps inside or a label on the cover. The book will be showing some signs of wear, and may have rubbing to edges of paperback cover or dustjacket, or noticeable wear and rubbing to the book edges. There may be page yellowing or a fair amount of spine creasing.
FAIR:- a rather worn copy, where all the text pages are complete (including any maps, photos and other illustrations) but which has definite signs of wear and may be missing endpapers, half-title page etc. If a hardback the binding or jacket (if it has one) may also be worn. Such defects will always be noted. There may be store stamps inside or a label on the cover of paperbacks.
POOR/READING COPY ONLY:- a rather worn copy which has definite signs of damage/heavy wear. Could include some of the following: very cracked spine, heavy watermarks, pages loose, lots of marks and annotations, the odd tear to pages. Again, all defects will be noted in the description. With this amount of wear the book is unsuitable for giving as a gift! Obviously all books I sell are suitable for reading! :-)
GENERAL NOTE: Please note that in a hardback book the dustjacket will be graded separately from the book itself. For all books and their jackets, all noticeable defects will be described – such as store stamps, writing, underlining, pages missing etc. If a book is in a borderline condition I will grade it +/-, e.g. G+ for an item, which does not quite make the grade for VG but is pretty close. G- for a book, that is edging on “not so good” but better than Fair.
