The DesignJet 800 is a solid printer albeit a little long in the tooth. It provides error codes rather than light error systems when it breaks down which makes it easier to report issues. It has around 8 maintenance kit parts which wear and tear with use. Parts are still available in 2019 although HP no longer make drivers for current OS like Windows 10. If you can buy for a low price then great. You can buy new DesignJets from around £600 and upwards for an A1 model.

I wanted a printer capable of producing A1 posters for the local Church. This is an obsolete model but new ones are still available. I chose to buy a second hand one which worked fine at first but then needed some new parts. these were easy to find on ebay and were very easy to fit. The printer is built on a modular basis so almost all parts are easily replaceable. Once I got it going it works well and although it is strictly speaking a plotter it will print good photographs without any problem. With compatible ink it is easy to produce A1 full colour posters at a very reasonable cost. In spite of the parts which needed replacing I still consider it to be a good buy and does just what I wanted it to do. It does not have wireless capability built in. I purchased an HP wireless printer server and, with some difficulty managed to get it to work wirelessly through my router and will now print quickly and easily from my laptop.Read full review
The 800 and 500 HP Designjets are the "Morris Minor" of wide format printers. The are very cheap to run, all sorts of parts are available and maintenance is both straight forward and inexpensive to maintain For example Printheads - (the most crtitical part) are just a few pounds and quick to fit. Unlike almost any other wide format printer. The print quality is very satisfactory and will delight uses with crisp sharp lines and vivid colour. All this means that they hold there value well. They are widely used by individuals printing canvas, photos, and within engineering and design companies for cad, technical drawings. Finally drivers as available for all windows OS and simple to install
