Herb Seeds - Bergamot Wild

Monarda fistulosa, Wild Bergamot or Beebalm, is a pleasantly scented member of the mint family growing up to 5 feet tall with rose-purple to lavender flowers. Native Wild Bergamot is a fragrant herbal tea when 3 to 4 dried or fresh leaves are placed in a cup of boiling water with honey. Monarda fistulosa has been used medicinally as a stimulant to remove the pain of colic. Wild Bergamot flowers do best when planted in average to rich soil in the back border of a butterfly garden or a prairie meadow, Wild bergamot flowers July and is pollinated by bees good for attracting wildlife into the garden. All the plant above ground level can be used, leaves are used raw or cooked as flavouring in salads and cooked food meats and beans. Medicinal properties improves digestion, colds, headaches fevers bronchial complaints. Wild Bergamot seed sow mid spring on in a cold frame plant out early summer, sow again in summer in areas where the winter is not too cold. Prefers full sun does not like the shade in a light dry alkaline soil.



Sowing Instructions

Sowing

Sow the small seeds indoors in the Spring on the surface of the soil. Cover lightly and sprout with bottom heat. Transplant the seedlings when they're large enough to handle, harden off, then plant in the garden after frost.



Growing

Bee balm, lemon mint or bergamot is a beautiful cut flower. A row of lemon mint in full-sun and rich moist soil will benefit the bees. The distinctively fragrant blooms are good for cutting, so grow enough to share with the bees



Harvest

Pick the leaves as desired for fresh use in the kitchen. For drying, harvest leaves before the flowers open. Cut flowers for drying as soon as they're fully open. Masses of tiered pink-purple blossoms grow from August until frost.
