This sale is for a vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “Child Marriage: The Indian Minotaur,” subtitled “An Object-Lesson from the Past to the Future,” by Eleanor F. Rathbone, M.P.
It was published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd., of London, and is the 1934 FIRST EDITION (stated).
The Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 popularly known as the Sarda Act after its sponsor Rai Sahib Harbilas Sarda to the British India Legislature in India was passed on 28 September 1929, fixed the age of marriage for girls at 14 years and boys at 18 years. It came into effect six months later on April 1, 1930 and it applies to all of British India, not just to Hindus. It was a result of social reform movement in India. The legislation was passed by the British Indian Government.
It was the first social reform issue which was taken up by the organized women in India. They played a major role in the development of argument and actively used the device of political petition and in the process contributed in the field of politics.
Eleanor F. Rathbone (1872–1946) was an independent British Member of Parliament and long-term campaigner for women's rights. She was a member of the noted Rathbone family of Liverpool.

The book is in good condition for its age, internally neat save the odd creased corner, with wear/bumps and is a little grubby/faded to the original hardback cover, with a previous owner’s smart privately printed book-plate and the Author’s compliments slip at the front and no ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket.
